Genevieve Valentine's latest novel is Icon. But the other thing this book makes clear is the value and crucial importance of black women intellectuals making a record for themselves - performative utterance, legitimizing a legacy that history might otherwise forget. It's been over a century since Anna Julia Cooper named "undisputed dignity" as a prerequisite for social and racial equality for black women, and nearly every woman quoted in Beyond Respectability, no matter the era, takes note of how distant that ideal remains. Reading this book, it's hard to escape its condemnation of history. Sometimes the veil between Then and Now is even thinner - take Mary Church Terrell's 1905 essay "The Mission of the Meddler," in which she exhorts the political meddler to "ask disagreeable questions about the political corruption which makes a single white man in one section equal to seven in another." Reading this book, it's hard to escape its condemnation of history.īeyond Respectability also connects this history to the ways contemporary black women spearhead public discourse, from Melissa Harris-Perry to the use of social media as an activist platform, as when Patrisse Khan-Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi introduced #BlackLivesMatter. It introduces concepts of the black woman as a public citizen in post-Restoration America, and explores women whose work pushed against the dominant narrative - Fannie Barrier Williams speaking of black women as a political body, Mary Church Terrell documenting resistance over the course of decades, Pauli Murray's discussions of queerness, Toni Cade Bambara's 1970s anthologies of black women's writing - and draws us through that history to the present. (It means "to invest with mental or emotional energy," and that's as good a description of this book as any.)īut it's clear early on that Beyond Respectability is a work of crucial cultural study. It takes its material seriously and expects you will, too, and though you don't have to be particularly well-read on this history going in, expect to be rereading certain sentences, flipping to the end notes for further reading, and double-checking the definition of terms like cathect. While this is a rewarding read, it's an academic history rather than a chatty one. it's clear early on that 'Beyond Respectability' is a work of crucial cultural study. Through actions like listing – creating "lists of prominent, qualified Black women for easy consumption," Cooper writes, these women gave context to their own history, granting "intellectual, political, and/or cultural legitimacy to the Black women speaking their names." And since these women were struggling against both racism and misogyny, that legitimacy was critical performative utterance became lifeblood. Cooper's Beyond Respectability, which profiles several black feminist intellectuals who not only fought against the idea of "respectability" as a prerequisite for being heard, but against the tendency of white feminists and black men to erase their contributions.įor the thinkers and activists Cooper writes about - whose work spans over a century of public intellectualism - verbally laying claim to public space was a crucial step in legitimizing their ideas. Performative utterance carries a particular power - it's the thing you want to make true.Īnd performative utterance is at the heart of Brittney C. "I now pronounce you" at a wedding is one "I christen this ship" is another. You know what a performative utterance is, even if you've never heard the term before. Confirmatory modelling, however, supports a two-dimensional model and the two dimensions predict different outcomes. Some have argued that optimism is the opposite end of a single dimension with pessimism, with any distinction between them reflecting factors such as social desirability. Health-preserving behaviors are associated with optimism while health-damaging behaviors are associated with pessimism. Optimistic scores on this scale predict better outcomes in relationships, higher social status, and reduced loss of well-being following adversity. Behaviourally, these two scores correlate around r = 0.5. The LOT returns separate optimism and pessimism scores for each individual. ĭispositional optimism and pessimism are typically assessed by asking people whether they expect future outcomes to be beneficial or negative (see below). As with any trait characteristic, there are several ways to evaluate optimism, such as the Life Orientation Test (LOT), an 8-item scale developed in 1985 by Michael Scheier and Charles Carver. Researchers operationalize the term differently depending on their research. Psychological optimism Dispositional optimism Īn optimist and a pessimist, Vladimir Makovsky, 1893 It is also influenced by environmental factors, including family environment, with some suggesting it can be learned. Variation in optimism and pessimism is somewhat heritable and reflects biological trait systems to some degree. Methods to measure optimism have been developed within both of these theoretical approaches, such as various forms of the Life Orientation Test for the original dispositional definition of optimism and the Attributional Style Questionnaire designed to test optimism in terms of explanatory style. Theories of optimism include dispositional models and models of explanatory style. For this reason, it is seen as a trait that fosters resilience in the face of stress. It thus reflects a belief that future conditions will work out for the best. This is usually referred to in psychology as dispositional optimism. Being optimistic, in the typical sense of the word, is defined as expecting the best possible outcome from any given situation. The term derives from the Latin optimum, meaning "best". A common idiom used to illustrate optimism versus pessimism is a glass filled with water to the halfway point: an optimist is said to see the glass as half full, while a pessimist sees the glass as half empty. Optimism is an attitude reflecting a belief or hope that the outcome of some specific endeavor, or outcomes in general, will be positive, favorable, and desirable. This explains why gagging may be accompanied by excessive salivation, lacrimation, sweating, fainting, or even a panic attack in a minority of patients. The portion of the medulla oblongata that receives these afferent impulses is also close to the vomiting, salivary, and cardiac centers, which may be stimulated during gagging. From here, efferent impulses give rise to spasmodic and uncoordinated muscle movements characteristic of gagging. Those with an HGR will often gag while eating thick or sticky foods that tend to get stuck in the mouth, such as bananas and mashed potatoes.įollowing intraoral stimulation, afferent fibers from the trigeminal (CN V), glossopharyngeal (CN IX), and vagus (CN X) nerves pass to the medulla oblongata. There will be no response when touching the damaged side.Ĭonversely, another study showed that 10-15% of individuals have a hypersensitive gag reflex. If both CN IX and CN X are damaged on one side, touching the intact side will result in a unilateral response with a deviation of the palate to that side. If the vagus (X) nerve is damaged and either side is touched, the soft palate will elevate and move toward the affected side. If the glossopharyngeal (IX) nerve is damaged on one side, there will be no response when touched. To test the gag reflex, you gently touch one and then the other palatal arch with a cotton swab or tongue blade, waiting each time for gagging. Testing the gag reflex can help assess CN IX and CN X damage. In certain instances, a lack of a gag reflex may be a symptom of a more severe medical condition, such as cranial nerve damage or brain death. This percentage may be higher in patients with a history of smoking or tobacco use. According to one study involving 140 people, 37% were found to have an absent gag reflex. It is not uncommon for an individual to lack a gag reflex. Here, sensory stimulation of the soft palate travels through the nucleus of the spinal tract of the trigeminal nerve.Īs previously stated, individuals may suffer from either a lack of a gag reflex or a hypersensitive gag reflex (HGR). Stimulation of the soft palate can also elicit the gag reflex in this case, the sensory limb is the trigeminal nerve (CN V). Efferent nerve fibers to the pharyngeal musculature traverse from the nucleus ambiguus through CN X, resulting in the bilateral contraction of the posterior pharyngeal muscles.Ĭontraction of the pharyngeal musculature ipsilateral to the side of the stimulus is known as the direct gag reflex, and contraction of the musculature on the contralateral side is known as the consensual gag reflex. In turn, these nuclei send fibers to the nucleus ambiguus, a motor nucleus in the rostral medulla. These sensations are carried by CN IX, which acts as the afferent limb of the reflex to the ipsilateral nucleus solitarius (also referred to as the gustatory nucleus) after synapsing at the superior ganglion located in the jugular foramen. The stimulus is provided by sensation to the posterior pharyngeal wall, the tonsillar pillars, or the base of the tongue. The nerve roots of cranial nerves IX and X exit the medulla through the jugular foramen and descend on either side of the pharynx to innervate the posterior pharynx, posterior one-third of the tongue, soft palate, and the stylopharyngeus muscle. The gag reflex is controlled by both the glossopharyngeal (CN IX) and vagus (CN X) nerves, which serve as the afferent (sensory) and the efferent (motor) limbs for the reflex arc, respectively. In cases of psychogenic gag reflexes, even the thought of touching a sensitive trigger area, such as occurs when going to the dentist, can induce gagging. A psychogenic gag reflex presents following a mental trigger, typically without direct physical contact. A somatogenic gag reflex follows direct physical contact with a trigger area, which may include the base of the tongue, posterior pharyngeal wall, or tonsillar area. The gag reflex can be classified as either somatogenic or psychogenic. |
